When the Color of the Year Isn’t a Color at All

by | Modern Sales, Sales Sage

Pantone announced its Color of the Year last week, and designers everywhere braced for something bold.  A jewel tone, a joyful hue, maybe even a warm, earthy shade to carry us into a more hopeful season.

Instead, they unveiled Cloud Dancer – a soft white so subtle it had the internet wondering whether a color had actually been chosen at all.  You can read Pantone’s official announcement here.

And let me tell you… The comments were a sport unto themselves.

“We need joy now, and this is not it.”
“A beautiful shade of dishwater.”
“Cloudy, with a chance of whitewash.”
“Like watching the news.”
And my personal favorite: “Even Pantone is done with trying to figure out what to do next. They left the color blank.”

I’ll admit it — I didn’t just read the comments.  I devoured them. Scrolling, nodding, laughing out loud because when designers get expressive, it’s a level of catharsis we don’t get nearly enough.

But when I read Pantone’s reasoning, the tone shifted.

“A promise of clarity.”
“A conscious statement of simplification.”
“Release from distraction.”
“Our search for balance between our digital future and our primal need for human connection.”

This wasn’t a shrug.  It was an intentional gesture toward quiet, focus, and pause. And while I can appreciate the poetry of that, I also found myself nodding along with another take I read — a beautifully written reflection by a prominent Black designer who pointed out something essential:

Design isn’t neutral — and Cloud Dancer isn’t either

Design has a long history of being associated with a narrow, often elite (and often white) lens of taste and refinement. She reminded us that people — and the cultures they come from — are colorful, vibrant, expressive, bold.
Their homes, their identities, and their stories don’t naturally gravitate toward blank slates. And in a moment where so many people are reclaiming voice, expression, and visibility, elevating a color with so little presence feels… complicated.

She wasn’t criticizing the color.
She was naming a cultural truth.

The beauty of our industry is that it holds multitudes.  Some clients find comfort in quiet. Some find home in vibrance. Both are valid. Both matter.

That lens helped me see Cloud Dancer differently — not as “the color we need,” but as one conversation among many about expression, overwhelm, privilege, identity, and clarity.

And, surprisingly, tucked inside that swirl is a lesson that applies beautifully to sales.

Cloud Dancer and the Moment Before the Conversation Begins

Most design sales trainings skip this part:  Before any meaningful sales conversation happens — before you try to create a relaxed, connected, engaging, personalized, and transformative ReCEPT™ experience —
there is always a pause.

Not the “I’m waiting to talk again” kind of pause.
The breath-before-connection kind.
The moment when you choose the way you’re going to show up.

This is the Cloud Dancer moment:
Not because it’s white.
Not because it’s quiet.
But because it represents space.

This moment IS The Modern Sales Way™

The space where you decide:

  • Will I lead this conversation with presence or with pressure?

  • Will I rush to fill the silence or let trust take its first breath?

  • Will I perform… or will I be?

A ReCEPTive experience isn’t something you tack onto your presentation.  It’s something you enter.  It requires presence. And the entry point is always a moment of quiet intention — your own version of a blank slate where you release the noise long enough to bring your full self into the room.

That blank moment is not the “color we all need right now.”
But it is the moment that lets you do your best work.

Why the Pause Matters in The Modern Sales Way™

Here’s where things get clearer:  Your clients walk into every consultation overwhelmed.  They’ve researched to exhaustion.  They’ve compared prices, fabrics, features, reviews, influencer videos, and Pinterest boards.

Their minds are loud.
Yours is too.

When you skip the intenional pause, the Cloud Dancer moment, you end up leading the conversation from adrenaline rather than clarity.  From pressure rather than presence.

But when you take that breath, everything changes. Suddenly you’re guiding, not chasing. Listening, not performing. Connecting, not convincing.

This is the heart of The Modern Sales Way™ — a personalized, trust-based, confident approach that helps clients feel safe, seen, and inspired to say yes for the right reasons.

In a world where everything feels loud, clarity becomes a luxury good. And you are the one who brings it into the home.

So What Do We Do With a Color That Isn’t a Color?

We don’t assign it a universal meaning. We don’t declare that everyone needs simplicity or quiet or neutral tones to feel at home.

Instead, we treat Cloud Dancer as an invitation — a reminder that before any meaningful transformation, there is always a pause.
Not a pause that erases identity.
Not a pause that dulls color.
A pause that lets you arrive fully enough to honor who is sitting in front of you.

Because when you walk into a client’s home, you don’t bring blankness.

You bring color — real, vibrant, human connection — the kind that transforms hesitation into confidence and conversations into relationships.

Pantone may have delivered dishwater this year.
But you?
You bring the part that matters.
